Mieko Hirooka ('36)

Mieko Hirooka Mitsutani was a member of the Class of 1936 at Wellesley College. She was the last pre-war Wellesley graduate from Japan. Before Wellesley, she graduated from the American School in Tokyo and also studied at Abbot Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. At Wellesley College, she was involved in activities that showcased Japanese culture to the campus community, and performed tea ceremony demonstrations.

After Wellesley...

  • The descendent of Asako Hirooka, a prominent Japanese businesswoman in a male dominant society
  • Married Mr. Shunkichi Mitsutani, a businessman 
  • Founded the Tokyo Wellesley Club in 1946
  • Completed writing, editing, and translating work for the Kyoto University Zoology Research Institute, the Institute of International Cultural Relations, and the Encyclopedia Japonica
  • During the post-war occupation period, worked for the Education Division of the Civil Information and Education Section of the General Headquarters 
  • After marriage, established an export and import firm, Japan Mercantile Company K.K. with her husband  
  • NHK made a well-known drama series called "a-sa-ga-ki-ta"

Mieko Hirooka passed away on November 23rd, 2010.
