FAQ

Why should I study East Asian languages and cultures?

We answer this question with the same answer we give to students who wonder why it’s important to study literature, history, and the arts: studying languages and cultures fosters deeper human connection. It is our belief that a strong education in the humanities gives students sharper insight into the experiences of people around the world and allows them to see how they fit into the bigger picture.

What can I do with an EALC degree?

Our alumnae have gone on to work in a wide variety of fields, including international marketing, translation, and business. Employers in every field are looking for people with foreign language skills.

Can I be a double major?

Many of our students are double majors! We have students from political science, economics, computer science, and countless other departments who supplement their other majors with Japanese, Korean, and Chinese language and culture studies. Our flexible major and minor tracks allow students to take courses that interest them while leaving room to study other subjects.

Can I study abroad?

We encourage you to study abroad! Many of our students spend a summer, a semester, or even a year in East Asia. Studying in China, Japan, or Korea gives students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect with people in their host countries while immersing themselves in the language and culture. What’s more, many students complete their major or minor credits while abroad. This grants students the flexibility to take more elective courses (or focus on their other major) once they return to Wellesley.
