Mental Health First Aid
We are proud to offer Mental Health First training to our campus community in our efforts to create a community of care that looks out for one another and help individuals know how to help someone in need. This program has been made possible by generous donors who ensure we are able to offer this to the community at no cost to participants.
What is it?
Much like CPR helps a person with no medical training assist in a medical emergency, Mental Health First Aid helps a person assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis.
In this internationally recognized training, instructors will take you through what you should know when you encounter someone in crisis, what a crisis is, and how to connect someone to appropriate supports.
What topics does it cover?
We will cover topics ranging from depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychosis, and substance use disorders. Participants are taught how to apply a 5-step action plan in a variety of situations, such as helping someone through a panic attack, engaging with someone who may be suicidal, and other difficult scenarios.
Please note: some of the content in the training shows imagery of substance overdose, panic attacks, psychosis, and discussions of suicidal ideation, self-harm, and other mental health crises. Participants are encouraged to step out of the room and take a break at any time they need.
What does the training entail?
The training is 6 hours (with lunch provided) with two additional hours of pre-work to be completed prior to the training. At the end of your participation, you will receive a certificate from the organization (great for your resume and experience!).
