Clapp Library

The library is in need of critical repairs to systems such as heating, cooling, electrical, plumbing, and roofing replacement. Some programmatic enhancements are being considered as part of the upgrades. These include additional instructional space (particularly suited for Special Collections and Archives), an improved Maker Space, and a new café. The design phase will begin summer 2023. Please find the official announcement here

The goal of the library project is to address critical repair needs in the building:

  • Upgrade entire HVAC system including conversion to low temp hot water (energy efficient)
  • Upgrade electrical, fire sprinkler, lighting, elevators, ADA access, and interior finishes.

There will also be program enhancements to improve the student experience in the library:

  • Cafe and gathering space on floor 1
  • Upgraded maker space
  • Addition of a classroom and other improvements in special collections and archives (floor 4)
  • Improved furniture for student study and gathering, including the historic Reading Room
  • Testing Center for exam accommodations

How will this impact our campus?

Given the importance of protecting the collections of the Library, and the size/magnitude of the project, the Library will be closed during construction, starting January 2024 and re-opening for Spring semester is 2025. During this time, library services will be available in the Modular Trailers and other temporary locations throughout campus. Materials will be available via the Recall system.
