Ted Wang Fellowship

Wellesley's Ted Wang Fellowship for East Asian Language & Business aims to encourage Wellesley College students with an interest in pursuing careers in business to gain advanced language skills in an East Asian language and knowledge of the richness of East Asian culture. During the spring semester of their junior year, Fellows will undertake a rigorous semester of study at one of our partner institutions in China, Korea, or Japan and complete an internship in a relevant business, either prior to or following the study abroad semester.

A product of collaboration between the East Asian Languages and Cultures Department and the Economics Department, the Ted Wang Fellows program seeks students who intend to double major or do a major and minor within our two departments (although other students may also apply). At least two years of language study will be required before departure (202 or equivalent). Wang Fellows will be given first priority for winter internships identified by our extensive Alumnae network, Career Education, the Office of International Studies, the Economics Department and the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. Wang Fellows must either submit a two to three-page report on their experiences in East Asia upon their return or blog periodically on a designated website.

Academic Program

Ted Wang Fellows will study abroad during the spring 2020 semester in Japan, Korea or China programs with excellent foreign language instruction and access to content courses taught in English or the target language in Economics or areas relevant to the student's academic and professional interests. At the conclusion of the program, students will take the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview or similar and receive a certificate attesting to the language proficiency.

Networking

Over the course of the semester, each student will be expected to conduct 8 informational interviews with professionals working in an industry that is of interest to the student. These may take place in the host city or elsewhere in the host country. Students will be connected to Wellesley alumnae networks for support in arranging these interviews. Fellows will receive a stipend of $2000 to cover costs related to this project.

Internship

Each Ted Wang Scholar will be placed in a full-time internship in the host country for 6-8 weeks before or after the semester abroad, during which time she will receive a stipend of $500 per week to cover living expenses.
