The Hiden Ion Desorption Probe (IDP) Series 500 quadrupole is equipped with ion extraction optics, which allows for direct analysis of low-energy positive and negative ions that desorb during isothermal electron-stimulated desorption experiments; the system can also be used for routine thermal and electron-stimulated desorption studies of neutral species. An upper mass range of 500 amu permits easier identification of high-mass radiolysis products. Pulse-counting not only lowers the minimum detectable partial pressure but also enables fast data acquisition (5 msec per amu), making possible the simultaneous detection of mass fragments with significantly different intensities.
