File Sharing

Your Responsibilities at Wellesley College

All users of Wellesley's technology resources must follow College-defined policies for responsible use .

Using Peer-t0-peer (P2P) systems like BitTorrent and programs that use these systems, such as Popcorn Time, Couch Potato, Stemio, and YMovies, to obtain videos and music which are copyrighted is illegal unless permission is granted by the copyright holder.

Legal Alternatives to File-Sharing

Many video streaming apps that promise free big name movies and shows without ads tend to hide the fact that they use illegal downloads from bittorrent to get the movies.  They also tend to include options to watch movies legally with plugins for big streaming services, so it can be tough to figure out what's legal and what isn't. We recommend staying away from these aggregator apps, such as Popcorn Time, Stremio, Couch Potato, and YMovies, unless they are on the lists of legal apps below.
