The Music Library contains a rich and diverse collection of Western classical music, jazz, world music, musical theater, and popular music, for both academic study of music and for performance studies. The Library has over 12,000 CDs of every kind of music, from Bach to bhangra to bebop and beyond, as well as collections of online music, available 24/7 to the Wellesley College community.
Music instruction at Wellesley College dates to 1875, and over the years, the Library has built a music collection that is unusually substantial for an undergraduate liberal arts college. The Music Library is rich in works by and about women composers, composers' complete works in authoritative editions, and facsimile editions of composer manuscripts. The collection is under active development, and requests are welcome.
Access & Use
The Music Library is open to the public. However, borrowing privileges are granted only to members of the Wellesley College Community and to individuals affiliated with designated institutions which are formally linked to the College.
Please see the Wellesley College Library's Access and Borrowing Policies for details on who may use the Music Library.
Course Reserves
Course reserves are the books, CD, scores, videos, and other materials that faculty members require for students' course work. Physical materials, such as books and DVDs, generally check out for 3 hours, while electronic reserves are available 24/7.
To find reserves for your course in the online catalog, select "Reserves by professor" or "Reserves by course" from the dropdown menu on the library's course reserves page. Write down the call number of the item(s) you want, and request them at the Music Library circulation desk.
