1. Please tell us a little about yourself!
I’m originally from Colombia but spent my last two years of high school studying in Hong Kong. I graduated from Wellesley in 2016 with a major in International Relations – Political Science, and minor in Chinese Language and Literature.
2. Why did you decide to become a Chinese Language and Literature minor? How did it shape your experience at Wellesley?
After studying Chinese for two years in Hong Kong and having the opportunity to live and study in mainland at a young age, I have always been fascinated by Chinese culture. I decided to continue my studies at Wellesley because I believe a deeper understanding of China will help advance my professional and personal goals. As a sophomore, I was fortunate to receive the Mayling Soong award to attend an intensive language course in Beijing. This experience made a huge difference and strengthened my commitment to the language.
3. What are you doing now?
I work in fashion sustainability at Esquel Group, a Hong-Kong based global textile and apparel manufacturer. During my first year, I was based in Gaoming, a small district in Guangdong province (southern China). I now work in Hong Kong developing and implementing corporate strategy around sustainability. Before joining Esquel, I was part of the inaugural class of Schwarzman Scholars in Beijing where I got my Masters in Global Affairs and Public Policy from Tsinghua University.
4. How has your Wellesley experience and your major influenced your life/career after college?
My time at Wellesley definitely influenced my interests and career trajectory. Wellesley was a place where cultural immersion, open-mindedness, and meaningful exchanges were celebrated. I was surrounded by amazing professors and advisors who encouraged me to apply for opportunities that ultimately shaped who I am today and cultivated my interest in becoming a bridge between China and the rest of the world.
