Knapp Fellows Program in the Social Sciences
Since Spring of 2019, the Knapp Social Science Center at Wellesley College has been offering a social science fellows program. The program matches interested faculty members and students to work together over the course of the semester. The program provides students with an opportunity to work one-on-one with faculty and to get exposure to the challenges and excitements of scholarly life.

- The program will fund about 6 Knapp Fellows, working under faculty supervision, up to 5 hours per week (on average) for 13 weeks per semester.
- Most of the faculty projects will span the entire academic year, but flexibility will be granted to those participants who request to participate only in the fall or only in the spring.
- Student fellows can provide research assistance, curricular support, technology support (such as web design), and help with outreach activities meant to promote research endeavors to the world outside of Wellesley.
- All student fellows are required to participate in KFP meetings, especially the Introductory meeting which will be scheduled during the first week of the program. Exceptions can be made due to extenuating circumstances. Faculty supervisors are also encouraged to join, but participation is not mandatory.
- The program may feature opportunities for faculty and student participants to present and get feedback on their on-going work.
- Remuneration: Students an hourly wage; Faculty do not receive any further monetary benefit other than getting a student assistant.
All faculty with research and/or teaching interests within the social sciences are encouraged to apply to the program.
- Should we have more faculty applicants than available funding, priority may be given to junior faculty, faculty who do not have a research assistant through another program, such as the Economics Department’s Case Fellows Program, faculty who take a particularly interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research and faculty who can cover a portion of their student wage through other funding sources.
- Faculty on leave are still eligible to apply.
- Finally, we will look for breadth in representation across departments and programs.
Eligible faculty members who are interested in supervising a Knapp Fellow will apply via a Google form which will be available on the Application Information page during the application window.
Current Wellesley College first years, sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible. Students taking a leave from the College for any reason are not eligible to apply to this program.
KFP positions will become available on Workday. Interested students may apply to one or more faculty projects, keeping in mind the particular qualifications listed in that faculty member's call for applications.
