Responsibilities: A Resident Assistant (RA) partners with a professional Community Director (CD) and House President (HP) to implement the residential curriculum. Resident Assistants (RAs) are key student leaders who have a commitment to facilitate community development and enhance the quality of residential life at Wellesley College. As members of a residential team, RAs collaborate to create a vital and engaged residential community. Resident Assistants aim to foster a spirit of generosity and civic engagement within their community. Together, the residential team provides programs and services that support the mission, vision, and values of the Office of Residential Life and Housing and the Wellesley College community, with the goal of creating a transformative living environment. The Resident Assistant (RA) role is a unique leadership and educational opportunity for students that allows them to build skills in program development, peer advising, community building, emergency response, and operations.
Given the diversity of housing options at Wellesley College, the specific responsibilities of Resident Assistants vary slightly from community to community, but in general, RAs are ultimately responsible for:
⪠Fostering opportunities for residents to explore their social, physical, intellectual, and emotional health and well-being.
⪠Providing support to residents around personal and academic concerns and in consultation with your House President and Community Director.
⪠Engaging residents through participation in community engagement. ⪠Educating residents about campus wide programs, resources, and opportunities. ⪠Providing access to programs and resources that cultivate the discovery of a strong sense of self.
⪠Educating residents about the standards and code of conduct that is a part of residential living.
⪠Developing supportive relationships with individual residents and creating strong floor and hall communities.
Curricular and Co-Curricular Activities: The RA role is designed to enrich your educational experience through robust leadership and skill development. It is expected that this student leader position will be your most significant co- curricular commitment and receive highest priority after academics.
Room Designation: As an RA, you will be assigned to a designated residence hall and room. If you resign or are released from your role, you will be required to move from your room within a timeframe determined in consultation with your supervisor. The Office of Residential Life and Housing will assist you in a new assignment. This space may not be renewed for the following year.
Remuneration: For your participation in trainings and on-going responsibilities, you will receive $4,500 for the 2021-2022 academic year. An amount of $2,400 will be directly applied to your student account in the form of a waiver and the remaining $2,100 will be paid as a stipend. Remuneration for a semester only RA is $2,250 as partial waiver and partial stipend. You MUST consult student financial services for the impact on your individual aid package.
Educational: RAs create, plan, and implement educational programs and community building activities reflecting the core values of the residential curriculum for their floors and communities. RAs support the educational priority of Residential Life and Housing by including in their programming a variety of educational events and activities that develop skills for healthy living, academic success, and personal well-being. RAs also promote and participate in community traditions and community specific events that enrich students’ residential life experience. Furthermore, RAs create opportunities for varied engagement and discussion; facilitating dialogue on diverse ideas, experiences and opinions. RAs serve to connect their residents to a wide array of cultural and community events on campus and in the community. RAs help facilitate the transition to College life by supporting New Student Orientation.
Peer Advising: An integral part of the RA role is the development of relationships with residents and in encouraging relationships between residents. Through their knowledge of resources and skills development in areas of peer mediation, RAs serve as active and engaged leaders within a community.
Community Role Modeling: RAs shall be informed about Wellesley College community standards and policies, role model these standards and policies, educate others, and be willing to address behaviors and language that violates the Honor Code and/or other College policies. RAs also serve as role models in a broader sense through active citizenship in the Wellesley community and by demonstrating maturity, balance, and compassion in their actions and speech.
Community Engagement: RAs have the opportunity to design and execute the Community Engagement (CE) experience within their residential hall(s). RAs will complete multiple CE shifts every month, and may be asked to connect with students
for lockouts, reporting maintenance requests, and other reasonable roles during Community Engagement.
Emergency Response: RAs may be called upon to provide assistance in response to emergency situations which may arise in the community. In many emergency situations, the RA’s role is to seek immediate assistance from Campus Police and the Community Director on call, as well as offer support for the individual(s) involved in the situation. In accordance with Title IX, Resident Assistants are required to report incidents of sexual misconduct, assault, harassment, and other matters that fall under the Student Sexual Misconduct Policy when they are being sought out in the capacity of their roles as an RA. The College’s Title IX Coordinator and professional staff will provide in depth resources and skills development on policies and reporting procedures.
Operations: RAs will have the opportunity to learn about the operations in Residential Life and Housing and will support the educational priorities of the department by assisting with various procedures such as opening and closing, and monitoring occupancy in the residence halls.
