- learningscientists.org - This website is created by cognitive psychological scientists with the goal of making "scientific research on learning more accessible to students, teachers, and other educators." Resources include a blog, downloadable materials for each evidence-based strategy, and videos on effective teaching and learning strategies. - Improving Students' Learning with Effective Learning Techniques - An excellent summary on the key strategies that improve learning and why they work. A shorter version of the article was published in American Educator.
- How Learning Works: Seven Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching - One of our favorite books on the science of teaching and learning. Read a two-page summary and download a digital copy of the book.
- Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning - Another practical book on the science of teaching and learning. The book's website contains a brief summary of each chapter. Cult of Pedagogy also wrote a summary of the book with practical tips and resources.
- Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning - Quick and simple teaching strategies that can have a powerful impact on student learning. The author, James Lang, also wrote a series of articles for the Chronicle about some of these strategies.
General Evidence-Based Teaching Resources
- Effective Instructional Strategies - CMU's Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence and Educational Innovation maintains a website with a wealth of useful materials. The instructional strategies website provides research-based suggestions for increasing the effectiveness of various instructional strategies (e.g., lecture, discussion, group projects). Their interactive Solve a Teaching Problem website helps educators think about the possible reasons and solutions to specific teaching challenges.
- Vanderbilt's Center for Teaching maintains an extensive list of teaching guides, which summarize the topic, offer practical tools and techniques, and provide the evidence to back it up! Guides focus on Pegagogies & Strategies (e.g., active learning, team-based learning), Challenges and Opportunities (e.g., teaching first-generation college students, teaching in times of crisis), and other topics.
- Collaborative Learning Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty - This book provides practical information about all aspects of implementing group work. Thirty different collaborative learning techniques are described in detail, with information about ideal group size, duration of the activity, and a step-by-step procedure for implementing each strategy.
Assessment of Teaching and Learning Resources
- The Assess Teaching and Learning page at CMU's Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence and Educational Innovation has a wealth of practical resources on assessing students' learning, including information on designing assignments and exams, assessing group work, and creating rubrics.
- Cornell's Center for Teaching Excellence has an excellent website on assessing students' learning, which includes self- and peer-assessment, writing good test questions, and using rubrics. Each area of assessment includes a list tools and references.
- Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers - This handbook contains 50 assessment strategies to gauge students' understanding in the moment. Each strategy includes a description, examples from various disciplines, a step-by-step procedure for implementation, and the estimated time and effort to implement the strategy. - Learning Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty - Another excellent handbook with 50 different active learning techniques to assess learning in your course.
