Wellesley College is now a member of HathiTrust, a global collaborative of research and academic libraries working towards its mission to ensure that the cultural record is preserved and accessible long into the future. HathiTrust offers reading access to the fullest extent allowable by U.S. copyright law, computational access to the entire corpus for scholarly research, and other emerging services based on the combined collection.

HathiTrust serves a dual role. First, as a trusted repository, it guarantees the long-term preservation of the materials it holds, providing the expert curation and consistent access long associated with research libraries. Second, as a service for members and the public good, HathiTrust offers persistent access to its rich digital collections. Services include viewing, downloading, and searching public domain volumes, and searching copyrighted works. Additional specialized features include access by persons with print disabilities, and the ability for users to group items into public or private collections.

HathiTrust’s 200+ members have contributed more than 17.4 million volumes from their library collections to the digital library, via Google, Internet Archive, and institutional digitization initiatives. More than 6.5 million of the contributed volumes are in the U.S. public domain and are freely available online.

What can I do with HathiTrust?
  • Search and browse HathiTrust’s digital library of 17 million books, journals, and publications that cover disciplines in the languages and literature, the sciences and social sciences, the arts, and more.  51% of the collection is in English, and hundreds of languages are represented, including many materials in German, French, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish.

  • Find data from 1.3 million U.S. Federal Documents, including the U.S. Congressional Serial Set, Bureau of Indian Affairs publications, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency publications, the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, and many other federal divisions.

  • Perform full-text (keyword or phrase) searches across the entire corpus or within a selection of items. Use full-text searches to discover what you’re looking for or to identify items for your research bibliography or to build a collection. View or download citations for any item in the collection in MLA or APA format.

  • Distinguish primary source or peer-reviewed items with greater ease using HathiTrust's rich and nuanced metadata.
