Non Resident Alien Employees
Policy
This policy covers faculty and staff who are Non Resident Aliens or Foreign Nationals. The employee's tax status depends upon various immigration information. The information is provided by the employee electronically under the College's Foreign National Information System (FNIS).
FNIS is a system used to gather visa and other various information. The individual will log into the system over the web based upon a user name and password provided by the Controller's Office and submit it for review. Based upon the information provided, the system will determine the tax status.
Information on the FNIS system must be updated annually to verify tax status each year.
Procedure
Human Resources, Provost's Office or Student Financial Services will notify Payroll when a new employee who is a non resident alien or foreign national is hired.
The Payroll Office will forward a user name and password for the employee to log into the web under FNIS and complete the required information. After the information has been received, FNIS will determine the tax status of the employee. The appropriate tax forms will be printed and forwarded to the employee for signature. The signed tax forms should be returned to the Payroll Office and entered into Workday.
This process will be repeated in December of each year so that the employee's tax status may be confirmed on an annual basis.
