Tuesday, October 6, 2021
The Department of Classical Studies invites all to a talk via zoom with Stephanie McCarter, Associate Professor of Classical Languages, Sewanee, The University of the South.
Professor McCarter looks critically at how sexual violence has been translated in English versions of Ovid's Metamorphoses and outlines her strategies for more effectively--and more faithfully--construing rape and the objectified female body.
Professor McCarter's English translation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses will be a watershed moment for Roman studies as she is the first woman to author an English translation of this important poem. In her talk, she will discuss the process of translation, the importance of translating violent scenes accurately, and how we are to read and interpret Ovid’s depiction of violence against women in the #metoo era.
