You may have read news articles about several global ransomware attacks. All Windows computers are vulnerable and must be patched. Windows computers need at least the March Windows Updates. Most College PCs should have this patch downloaded already, but you may need to install it and reboot. If you have Windows XP or version 8 (8.1 is fine), please contact the Help Desk for assistance. There are special updates for non-supported version of Windows that Microsoft released especially for this.
To check if your Windows PC is patched:
-
Click on the Start Menu and type Windows Update.
-
Click on Windows Update in the search results.
-
On the left side of that window should be an option for View Update History.
-
Click on Name to sort the list. The latest Security Monthly Quality Rollup will display at the top. As long as the version listed is “2017-03” or higher, you are protected. However, LTS recommends that you have the latest patches installed, so please make sure you have the most recent month's update.
-
If you see 2017-02 or lower, click the Back arrow button in the window and click Check For Updates and follow the prompts to Install updates. You will need to restart your computer in this process.
