Marilynne Robinson: The Reformed Heritage
Renowned novelist and essayist Marilynne Robinson will present a lecture, “The Reformed Heritage,” as part of Wellesley’s commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Humanities Medal, and the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction, Robinson has written compellingly about the Calvinist, or Reformed tradition in her celebrated trilogy Gilead (2004), Home (2008), and Lila (2014). In her essay collections The Death of Adam (1998) and The Givenness of Things (2015) she has applied Reformed theology as part of a powerful critique of contemporary American culture. In this year’s Elizabeth Luce More ’24 Lecture, she will give a new reading on the relevance of the Reformed heritage for today.
