Book Launch Party for Claudia Joskowicz
Please join the Newhouse Center for a celebration of Professor Claudia Joskowicz's new artist monograph, Stillness in Motion | Quietud en Movimiento (Turner, Madrid).
Stillness in Motion presents a panoramic view of recent production by the prominent Bolivian video artist Claudia Joskowicz, known for her engagement with history, memory, and the spaces of Latin American social realities. Utilizing a hybrid format between photography and cinema, Joskowicz's artistic practice distances itself from documentary approaches by avoiding closed narratives with predetermined ethical and political conclusions.
Through long takes, double shots, and dialectical oppositions (stillness-movement, silence-noise, center-periphery), her work challenges the traditional focus of the camera, creating a space that allows for the active reconfiguration of the gaze. Thus, highlighting the role of the spectator in the creation of historical narratives, Joskowicz invites deep reflection on collective memory.
Joskowicz will be in conversation with Professor Susan Ellison. Refreshments will be provided!
