Aldon Morris, professor of sociology and African American studies at Northwestern University, gives a lecture on Du Bois’s work in formulating American sociology from its inception with the publication of Philadelphia Negro (1898). It is Morris’s contention, as put forth in his book The Scholar Denied: W.E.B. Du Bois and the Birth of Modern Sociology, that Du Bois has not been given the correct scholarly recognition because of racism in the academy. Morris’s work rescues him from this fate and has been well-received by the scholarly sociological community.
