Data Science

Data Science lies at the intersection of computer science, mathematics, and statistics. A student pursuing a major in Data Science will develop a strong foundation in all three areas and complete coursework that emphasizes the integration of the three.

 

Update: February 1, 2024

In May 2023, the Academic Council approved a regular major in Data Science, which replaces the previous structured individual major. Starting in the academic year 2023-2024, students who declare Data Science will follow the revised requirements for the new, regular major. The changes reflect what we learned from the experiment of offering the individual major for several years, and the Data Science faculty are excited to offer this improved sequence. The differences between the old and new major requirements can be found in this document. The new major requirements are further detailed in the course catalog.

Prospective data science majors who have not previously spoken to an advisor are assigned to advisors by students' last names. Students who have already spoken to a data science advisor should continue to work with that advisor and do not need to switch or reach out to another advisor. These are the updated last name cutoffs for spring 2024.
