Close to 100 guests attended a Monday evening reception held in Tishman Commons to honor retiring Wellesley staff members. It was an occasion for reflection among members of the Wellesley community who have contributed decades of service to the College.
Barkley Shafer, a project assistant in the Wellesley Centers for Women (WCW) for 23 years, said she loved her time at the WCW, particularly when she participated in projects related to subjects such as families, children, and work.
“It was very interesting, relevant work,” she said. “I was able to contribute to research, and in the process I grew because these were opportunities to constantly learn, and the staff were wonderful to work with.”
Sharon Pierce, a billing coordinator in Health Service, said she is leaving Wellesley with enduring memories and looked forward to being able to spend time with her family, which includes several grandchildren.
“But I’m still going to connect with the dear friends I’ve made here at Wellesley,” said Pierce, who has worked at Wellesley since 2000. “Some of them are just like family to me.”
President Paula A. Johnson said in remarks that the gathering was “a testament to this community and to the many relationships formed over the years.” “As we enjoy each other’s company,” she said, “I hope we will recount your many stories of Wellesley, stories that span decades, because we are here to honor your years of service and dedication."
