Wellesley Celebrates Its 142nd Flower Sunday
At the center of Flower Sunday is the pairing of upperclass students, or “big sisters,” with first-year students, or “little sisters.” As an official welcome into the Wellesley community, big sisters bring flowers to their little sisters and accompany them to the flower-filled Houghton Chapel and Multifaith Center for a festive program of music, dance, and poetry. The connections formed on Flower Sunday will last throughout the year as the upperclasswomen give support, advice, and friendship to the younger women.
About 1,200 students attended this year's service, which included readings by Wellesley President Paula Johnson and Sheilah Shaw Horton, vice president and dean of students, along with performances by the Wellesley College Choir and student-led dance ensembles, Yanvalou and ascenDance (pictured above).
