The Art Department is proud to host the first ever exhibition of quilts from the collection of John Rhodes.

Featuring examples primarily from the American South, some of the quilts are of relatively modern origin, but most are from the 1920s-40s. They represent a wide range of techniques and traditions, with both hand- and machine-sewn examples. A small fraction of these quilts will be on display in the Jewett Arts Center in the Fall 2021 semester, giving members of the College community an opportunity to enjoy and learn from these wonderful objects, and to remember John, who died in March of this year, at the age of 75.

John Rhodes was a senior lecturer emeritus of art history at Wellesley College, teaching a variety of subjects within the Art and Writing programs from 1982 to 2010. His publications include works on the architecture and landscape design of Wellesley. A connoisseur with a keen eye, he was interested in the craft and design of handmade quilts, and amassed a serious collection.

This in-person exhibition is open only to students, staff, and faculty in the Wellesley College testing protocol.
