The Boston Printmakers North American Print Biennial is one of the most prestigious events in printmaking. Open to North American artists aged 18 or older, this juried exhibition highlights some of the most exciting artwork happening in contemporary and traditional printmaking today. Exhibiting artists work with traditional techniques like woodcut, lithography, and intaglio; some artists work with new technologies.

Although there may be trends in submitted work, there is no set theme, and there is no limit to the variety of subjects included, all of which show the breadth and depth of interests, concerns, and imaginations represented by the artists.

This year’s juror, Shelley R. Langdale, is president of the Print Council of America and the Park Family Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Previously, she worked at the Fogg Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Over the years, Langdale has organized and collaborated on a wide range of exhibitions, and in 2010, she was a member of the curatorial team for the international contemporary art festival Philagrafika, held throughout the city of Philadelphia.

The mission of the Boston Printmakers, founded in 1947, is to promote public knowledge of printmaking, encourage and support artists working in printmaking, and promote excellence and innovation within the field.

The 2019 Biennial is hosted by the Wellesley College Art Department in the Jewett Art Gallery and Jewett hallway galleries. Centered around the Dactyl Press studios in Pendleton West and the Book Arts Lab in Clapp Library, Wellesley has a rich history of printmaking and print-focused education. A number of Wellesley College students will be featured in this year’s Boston Printmakers student print exhibition, on view from November 17 to December 13 in the Mazmanian Gallery at Framingham State University.
