Rhinoceros
Called an “allegory for our times” by the New York Times, Eugene Ionesco’s 1959 play Rhinoceros is a touchstone of 20th-century theater that combines the sublime with the ridiculous in its savage commentary on the human condition. An entire community seems to be rapidly transforming into rhinoceroses. What enables anyone to avoid succumbing to mass metamorphosis? The New York Post said of the work, “Its satirical humor, combined with its provocative theme and surprisingly moving ending, results in an evening that is strange, disturbing, and arresting.”
