Claire Moreland:

Remember a Place Not Here

Claire Moreland
Architecture major

My work is an investigation into our preception of spaces. Looking at our understanding of our physical surroundings both past and present, my work highlights the individuality and intimateness of one's spatial experience. All maps contain the personal biases of the map maker. Rather than attempt to reduce them, my practice aims to identify and amplify these biases in order to generate an accurate map of my personal perception of space. This artistic process relies heavily on mental exercises in memory and intuition. The resultant work gives insight as to how the mind forms an understanding of its surroundings. It's an analytical and "scientific" approach to derive objectivity from the subjectivity of personal perception. However, each experiment reflects the individual at an instantaneous point in time. Meaning, repeat experiements will likely never produce identical results due to the infinite number of variables across space and time.
