As an Environmental Studies major with an interest in ecology, I decided to contextualize this sculpture with my academic interests. After a trip to the Harvard Natural History Museum and by exploring the archives at the Davis Museum, I was inspired to create hummingbirds in flight. In the archives of the Davis Museum I saw a collection of bird sculptures that reminded me of the hummingbird display at the Harvard Natural History Museum. By stacking the birds in a tiered display, I aimed to stay true to the scientific lens through which I had initially witnessed the hummingbirds at Harvard, while simultaneously incorporating the playful characteristics of the birds I saw at the Davis. The process of creating this piece compelled me to think about repetition, relatedness, and the connection between art and science.
