These self portraits were created through an independent study of medium-format photography. Having been previously familiar with analog photography in a 35mm format, I was excited to explore a new kind of camera. Self portraiture forced me to purposefully compose and control every part of the image, which also led me to scrutinize my own appearance in addition to the technical qualities of the work. Anticipating this, I used wigs, props, and makeup to not only make more dramatic images but also to create more characters to represent. I have a background in dance, so gesture and pose are significant but natural and enjoyable parts of my process. A large number of my images were taken with the help of mirrors, and I capitalize on the confusion and extra distance this creates. Depite the level of control and the meticulous set-up these images demand, I am forced out from behind the camera in order to pose in front of it. Paradoxically, I am unsure of what I have captured until afterwards.
