The installation is one of the programming components of the The Kathryn Wasserman Davis ’28 Fund for World Cultures and Leadership during the fall of 2001. Japan from Somewhere Else addresses the ways in which Japanese culture and visual imagery has permeated cultural boundaries. The photographs in the exhibition were collected by Mary Alice Knox, instructor of history at Wellesley College, in 1886 – 1887 while traveling to Japan and gathering materials for use in her courses on Oriental (Asian) civilization. Wellesley College and Tufts University will host the annual Association of Japanese Literary Studies meeting on the weekend of November 9 – 11, 2001.
