How do we see the places we visit, and what images do we desire to take home with us? About Away features photographs from the Davis Museum’s permanent collection that concern the observations and motives of women when they travel away from home to make pictures. These travelers report, savor, or question the social and natural landscape they encounter, whether close at hand or far away. This installation is organized in conjunction with a seminar offered by Professor Marilyn Sides on literary travel writing. About Away includes work by Marion Post Wolcott, Helen Levitt, Virginia Beahan and Laura McPhee, Lois Conner, Mary Peck, Susan Meiselas, Flor Garduno, and Barbara Bosworth, among others.
