Complex problems. Big questions. Investigation and inquiry. In-depth research. Long-term solutions. Innovation and creativity.

STEM intersects a broad range of career paths and opportunities, but all of them will in some way interact with the themes of problem solving and scientific inquiry. Those involved in the STEM community are people who are passionate about using their knowledge, skills, and talents to grapple with these themes and work their way toward real-world solutions.

What are some of the real-world topics in need of exploration and solutions in this area? Climate change. Artificial intelligence. Mars missions. Self-driving cars. Data security. STEM education. Clean energy. With the rapid development of technology and the exponential growth of innovative industries in need of problem solvers, we will continue to see these topics and more evolve as solutions are found and new questions are asked.

In a traditional sense, STEM industries offer opportunities that align with the following academic fields: astronomy and astrophysics, biology, neuroscience, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, engineering, geosciences, math, physics, and psychology. However, since major does not necessarily equal career, anyone with an interest in these academic fields or industry areas can find a segment of their own career journey connected to STEM.

Students and alumnae are encouraged to get started by exploring the resources below and scheduling an appointment in Handshake to meet with the industry advisor for STEM students, Alexis Trench.

Science Center Summer Research Program - application deadline

Research is open to all Wellesley students with an interest in research. Only students who will be continuing their studies at Wellesley in the following academic year (i.e., to rising sophomore, juniors and seniors) are eligible to participate. Recent graduates will not be supported.

Research/Gradschool, International Student, Undergraduate

Every year, the Science Center offers Summer Research Awards to students interested in spending their summer conducting research in a variety of science disciplines at Wellesley.

These offer students funded opportunities to conduct research under the supervision of faculty experts in their fields. As part of this full-time summer position, fellows attend workshops on the use of technology and participate in seminars where faculty and students present their work. The program culminates in a poster presentation where student researchers can share their work with other fellows and...

"Do I want to apply now?" There is no simple way to answer this question because the reasoning is different for each person. This resource will help you to consider if this is the best time for you to apply for graduate school.

“Listen to your heart and use your head. Math and science ignited my imagination for as far back as I can remember.”

“I was motivated to fight for environmental justice in my community after hearing about the respiratory illnesses that many children were diagnosed with as a result of the environmental contamination we live with.”

Technology Internships for First Years and Sophomores

While it is true that many internship opportunities are geared towards students in their junior year, an increasing number of companies are creating first-year and/or sophomore-focused internship programs. Please note that this is certainly not an exhaustive list, and there are a number of additional companies that may not have first-year/sophomore specific programs, but that are first-year/sophomore-friendly.
