Stephen Hamilton: A Day in Residency (Public Welcome)

Join Boston-based artist, arts educator, and scholar Stephen Hamilton for a day in residency at Wellesley. A Black American trained in traditional West African artforms, Hamilton will share his multidisciplinary practice with students, faculty, and staff through an arts workshop, artist’s talk, and informal conversations.

 

Hamilton’s artwork is on view now in the Boston Public Art Triennial and at the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University

 

3:00 - 4:00 PM: Curatorial Tour of Yoruba Art and African Textiles [Open to the Public]

Davis Museum and Galleries

Led by Dr. Semente, Curator of Education and Public Programs, this tour will explore Yoruba art and African textiles in the Davis Museum. Sign up here.  

5:00 - 6:30 PM: The Itan Project: Stephen Hamilton On His Art [Open to the Public]

Collins Cinema

Hear Hamilton discuss how he incorporates both Western and African techniques, blending figurative painting and drawing with resist dyeing, weaving, and woodcarving. 

 

This residency is co-organized by the Botanic Gardens, the Paulson Initiative, and the Davis Museum at Wellesley College.
