In the summer of 2017, Sydney attended Middlebury’s Russian Language School, where she lived in a 24/7 immersion environment: speaking, reading, writing and living in Russian for 8 weeks. Following the summer program, she spent the Fall of 2017 abroad with Middlebury’s program in Yaroslavl, Russia; in addition to studying Russian language, literature, history and culture, she volunteered with local English language clubs, helping to teach the language to Russians. She has also studied French (in high school and at Wellesley) and holds basic skills in reading, writing, and speaking. On campus, Sydney pitches on the Varsity Softball Team, is an active participant in her residence hall house council and in the Russian club, and has served on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. She also works on campus as a writing tutor, helping other students of all disciplines with various aspects of the writing process, from brainstorming to drafting to final revisions. In the Fall of 2017, she received the Kathryn Malone Sophomore Prize for Academic Excellence. After graduating from Wellesley, she hopes to explore careers in Education, Government, and Law, and plans to attend graduate school in one or more of these fields. She is particularly interested in educational policy work, and in organizations that focus on increasing access to education.
