Her research focus lies in harnessing natural chemical processes that occur in microorganisms for the purpose of advancing the production of sustainable materials. This past summer, Anika worked on developing microbially-induced self-healing concrete in the Furst Lab in MIT’s chemical engineering department. In addition to research, Anika is a tutor for Wellesley’s economics department and plays on the college’s Ultimate Frisbee club team. She also is proficient in French. Next summer, Anika will conduct research at the International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi, Kenya on reducing methane emissions from cattle populations.
