From 1995-2003 Lewis served as Dean of Harvard College, and in that capacity had general oversight over the experience of all Harvard undergraduates. In 2015, he served as interim Dean of Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Lewis earned his degrees, AB summa cum laude (1968) and PhD (1974), from Harvard. His books include several computer science textbooks, and also Excellence Without A Soul: Does Liberal Education Have a Future? (PublicAffairs), Blown to Bits: Your Life, Liberty, and Happiness After the Digital Explosion (co-authored with Hal Abelson and Ken Ledeen; Prentice-Hall), and What is College For? The Public Purpose of Higher Education (co-edited with Ellen Condliffe Lagemann, Teachers College Press).
