Rachel Carethers ’24
She is passionate about amplifying resilience in marginalized communities by prioritizing climate adaptations informed by cultural memory.
During summer 2023, she worked at MIT’s Environmental Solutions Initiative (ESI) analyzing legal rights and policies, documenting climate contributions of Afro-descendent communities in Latin America, and establishing a record for carbon removal entities in Latin America across Indigenous and Afro-descendant territories to support the Afro-InterAmerican Forum on Climate Change (AIFCC). Additionally, she researched and designed foundational and case-study modules for the inception of MIT’s Climate Justice Instructional Toolkit, of which she is continuing her work in fall 2023. Rachel is proficient in Spanish and studied at Universidad de Córdoba in the fall of junior year while interning at Fundación Arquitectura Contemporánea. In summer 2022, she launched an ongoing project, at Harvard Forest, with Nipmuc community leaders, centering traditional knowledge in invasive species management. On campus, Rachel is an intern at the Paulson Ecology of Place Initiative, a founding ambassador of Students for Intersectional and Environmental Justice (SIEJ), and a writer of global climate justice issues for The Policy Briefer, a Vienna-based think tank. She aims to work at an international organization focusing on sustainability strategy and social innovation."
